This week I checked the records of St. James Church Cathedral which
are available on microfiche. I was hoping that Hugh and Ellen’s
marriagewould be witnessed by a family member. Unfortunately, no
further information about his family is revealed. However, we learn
that in January of 1856, Hugh and Ellen witness the marriage of John
Kelly and Cecilia Marriet, both of Toronto. Four months later, this
young married couple witnesses Hugh and Ellen’s marriage. From the
church records, we see that John Kelly and Ellen Waggot are unable to
write.
In 1856, there are only two Peacocks listed in the city directory:
1856 Toronto Directory – Professional and Trades
p. 259 Peacock, Richard Sydenham St., Butcher
Peacock, Robert Yorkville, Butcher
On August 7, 1859 when Hugh and Helen have their second child,
Eliza, baptized at Knox Presbyterian Church on Queen Street,
five other babies are also christened. One of these babies is Margaret,
daughter of William Smith, clerk and Christine Loney of 2 Craig’s
Cottage, their next door neighbours.
