A. Nelson Peacock 1874-1951

Arthur Nelson Peacock was born in King Township, York County, Ontario on July 23, 1874. He was the fifth and youngest son and the ninth child of Hugh and Ellen Peacock. He went by his second name, 'Nelson,' and he was a barber by trade, first in the 1901 census in Brandon, then 1911 in Winnipeg, and finally in the 1916 census when he had his own shop in Springfield, east of Winnipeg.

Nelson appears with his parents in the 1881 census in Bruce County, Ontario and in the 1891 census in Whitehead, Manitoba. In the 1901 census in Brandon, Nelson, age 24 is living with his mother Ellen Peacock -age 63, and sister, Ettie - age 20.

In the 1906 census in Winnipeg, Nelson's name is incorrectly transcribed as "Wilson" but is Nelson in the original record. He is now 31 and married to Birdie M., age 25 and they have a daughter named Isabel who is two years old. Both Nelson's parents, Hugh and Ellen, are living with the young couple.

In 1911 they are still living in Winnipeg, in St Bonifice at 87 Marion Street. Nelson's wife's name is given as Bertha. Isabel must have died for there is only one child with them, a 4 year old daughter named Evelyn who was born February, 1907.

In 1916, the census records that Nelson, 40; his wife Bertha, 35; and daughter Evelyn, 9 are living at 260 Tache Avenue, Springfield, Manitoba. This is east of the city of Winnipeg. Nelson states that he is a barber and has his own shop.

There is an October 20, 1920 record of Nelson's brother, Samuel Peacock crossing the border from Winnipeg with a destination of White Fish, Michigan (or perhaps Minnesota). Samuel gave his last permanent address as the Pas, Manitoba. He gave his nearest relative as his brother Nelson of Kamsack, Saskatchewan.

Nelson's wife's name was Louise Alberta (Bertha) Shields. She was born in Ontario on November 7, 1878. She died in Winnipeg on June 13, 1930 at 51 years of age. A query on a genealogy website gives Nelson's year of death as 1951 but I have been unable to contact the person to learn more. His place of death is unknown.
