Grosse Ile, Quebec

A post card contributed by G.H. after a visit to Grosse Ile Sept/2010

' The Marine Hospital was built in 1881 as part of the quarantine station's modernization effort. It was the most modern of Grosse Île's hospitals, and burned down in 1968.' - [From the Grosse Ile website. Click on above title to access this website.]

Between 1832 and 1937, immigrants to Canada were processed on Grosse Ile, an island on the St. Lawrence River located north-east of Quebec City. It was first used because of a cholera epidemic. There are records of burials, marriages and hospital stays which can be searched at

Our ancestors do not appear in these records, so one can assume that they were healthy and passed through this stage of immigration quickly.
