Excerpts from a 1981 letter from Ralph Peacock of Orillia, Ontario, (shown in photo at left) son of James Andrew, grandson of Robert."In...reference to Robert's burial place, I took my father there about 1969/70 to clean the headstone and cut away some bushes. There was an indented stamp on the stone designating King William on his white horse. My father told me he'd been a District Grand Master of the Orange Lodge.
"I have a picture of Robert taken at Amherst, Nova Scotia on which Dad had written, 'this is my Father, Robert Peacock, born August 22, 1865, died December 8, 1899.' However, another note gives his birth as August 22, 1863 and married January 3, 1884. I believe the latter date is correct because he died at age 36 years.
"Robert died of pneumonia and it was Mary's second husband, Hall, who lost his legs. I can, as a small child, remember him walking around on his stumps covered with leather pads. Hall had a small variety store in Bracebridge that still stood up to a few years ago.

"Robert Peacock and Mary Samuels Moffatt had seven
children:
"James Andrew, b. Falkenburg March 30, 1886, married
Dec 27, 1905 in Bracebridge, Ontario to Rose Hannah Dickson;
moved to Haileybury in 1908 and to Quebec in 1935. Retired
in Orillia 1955. He died in 1971 and is buried beside my
mother in Haileybury, Ontario.
Their children -
Shirley (married Campbell), Norma (married Sutherland),
Mary (married Harrison), and Ralph. I was born in 1915
and have two daughers and one son. I am a retired mining
engineer, living in Orillia. My son Andrew is a Professor
at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia - industrial psychology
and business administration.
(Ralph's son died Dec, 1999 of Lou Gherig's disease.
He was honoured posthumously with a Special Achievement Award in
Economic Development presented by the National Council for Urban
Economic Development of Washington, D.C., and the Economic
Developers Association of Canada.)
"William Henry 'Harry', b. Falkenburg. Worked many years at the
Swift River Power Station and died of pneumonia as a bachelor
in his fifties.
"Cassie Golden (married Johnson) born in Tudwick, Nova
Scotia. She moved west and lost touch. One son, Kenneth,
living in Toronto.
"Robert 'Orville', born in Falkenburg, married Violet
Fitzpatrick of Ardtrea. They had two sons, Leonard and Gordon,
and two daughters, Mary and Audrey.
"Lousie May 'Dolly' (married Varty) born in Falkenburg and raised
by two aunts (Moffatt sisters) in Orillia. Vartys had four sons
and two daughters.
"Harvey Raymond - born in Scotia Junction, married in
Sturgeon Falls and died in Noranda at 56 years of age. He had
two sons, Lloyd and Darryl, and two daughters, Patricia and
Dwyla.
"Catherine Ann - born in Fiddersburg, Kentucky, USA. I have
no information or knowledge of Catherine although I believe she
died as an infant.
(There may be some confusion between Catherine Ann and Cassie Golden as
the information from Ralph does not fit with the census records. I wonder if
it was Cassie who was raised by the Moffatt sisters as Louise appears in the
1911 census at 15 with her mother and Mr. Hall in Bracebridge. )
"From the places of birth you can see the family moved about (?).
I understand Robert.....acquired some skills in railroad rockcut
excavation. He also owned or built a hotel in Scotia Junction.
"Robert's wife, Mary Moffatt was the grandaughter of Andrew
Moffatt born in Enniskillen County, Fermanaugh, Ireland, a
Presbyterian who immigrated to the US then to Orillia (Rama)
as a missionary teacher to the Indians. He married Mercy
Mainwaring, an American fellow missionary, and their son,
Thomas, was the first white child born in Orillia in 1834."
