Frederick & Vietta (Burke) Peacock

Photos contributed by ST

Frederick Peacock was the eldest son of John Peacock and Mary Ellen Oliver. He was named after his father's elder brother who was living in Philadelphia at the time of Fred's birth in Macaulay Township, Muskoka District, November 24, 1875. Fred appears with his parents in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census records for Macaulay Township.

However, in the 1901 census, Fred is also reported in Perry Township living at the hotel of his widowed Aunt Mary (Moffatt) Peacock probably in Scotia (Junction), as Mary's youngest son, Harvey, was born in Scotia in July of 1899 and her husband, Robert, died in Scotia in December of 1899. (At the time of Robert's death, his occupation was given as hotel keeper, Scotia. It appears that his widow continued to operate the hotel.)There was an eastern extension of the railway being built at this time, and probably lots of jobs for labourers and specialized workers.

Also in this 1901 census, there is an Edward Burk, born September 5, 1879. This may be the brother of Fred's future wife, Vietta Burke, although he also appears with his parents in the 1901 census.

Fred Peacock's wife, Vietta, was the daughter of David William Burk and Abigail Anderson. David Burk, a farmer, and his family appear in the 1881 and 1891 census records for Markham Township, East York. Their son Edwin's birth registration gives the family's address as Lot 10 Concession IX Markham Twp. (Edwin/Edward and Edmund all appear as his name in various records.)

Both David and Abigail were born in Ontario, but in the 1891 census, David states that his parents were born in New Brunswick. Abigail's parents were born in Ontario.

By 1901, the Burk family had relocated to Perry Township:

When Mary Peacock, daugher of John and Mary Ellen, married Henry Byford at Falkenburg in April of 1902, the witnesses were Caroline and Frederick Peacock of Scotia Junction. Frederick was probably Mary's eldest brother, but I am not sure who Caroline was. The original record may reveal a different name.

Fred Peacock and Vietta Burk married on December 24th, 1902. Fred's occupation is shown as labourer of Perry Township. Vietta was 21 and Fred, 28.The marriage took place in Parry Sound District. Both sets of parents are shown in full in this record.

Their first child's birth registration gives Hilda's names as Violet Hilda Mary Peacock born April 18, 1903 in the District of Parry Sound. Hilda's marriage record states that she was born in Kearney. Harold Alexander was born December 15th, 1904 at which time Fred was a labourer in Novar. It seems that Vera's birth was not registered and in 1973, probaby when she applied for her pension, she provided the details of her birth -Vera Winnifred, born October 21, 1909 in the village of Novar, Township of Perry. Her father is reported to have been born in Falkenburg and her mother, in Markham.

Sadly, both Fred and Vietta died in November, 1918 of influenza (probably the Spanish flu) and pnuemonia. The doctor who attended them and signed their death certificates was Dr. E.G. Evans, Hilda's future husband. They were living in Huntsville at the time of their deaths and Fred's occupation is shown as 'clerk.'

Where the children lived after their parents' deaths is still being researched.
In 1911, their grandmother, Abbie Burke, was 63 years old and living with her unmarried son, Lorne, who was a baker in Emsdale. David William Burk was at a 'home for the incurable' in York County where he died in July of 1912 from malignant carcinoma of the face from which he had suffered for two years. Abigail died October 5, 1928 at the home of her son, Arthur Burke, in Windsor, Ontario. She was 81 years old and she was buried in Huntsville. In this record, her father is shown as Peter Anderson but her mother's name is not given.

Their Peacock grandmother, Mary Ellen, was living in Orillia at the time of Fred and Vietta's deaths.
