In the 1901 Census, when Hugh and Ellen were living in different
cities, and Ellen is shown as the ‘head’ of the family (two unmarried
adult children living with her), she gives her date of birth as
December 23, 1837, and her date of immigration to Canada as 1848.
Other dates for both events appear elsewhere, but these seem most
reliable since she (as the head) probably spoke to the enumerator.
The marriage of Ellen’s sister, Elizabeth, appears in the records of
Knox Presbyterian Church, Queen Street, Toronto in 1868.
(For a photo of the interior and history of the church see
http://www.knoxtoronto.org/history/Knox-1848.html )
Elizabeth was 25 years old and gives her place of birth as
Monaghan County, Ireland and her parent’s names as Samuel
Waggett and Eliza Pogue.
The marriage took place at 38 William Street (now called Simcoe
Street) in St. Patrick’s Ward (north of Queen West and west of
University Ave then College Street) in the same part of town
where Ellen and Hugh lived until at least 1860.
This address may have been the manse of Rev. Andrew Topp
who performed the ceremony. The witnesses were Ellen and
George Lunney ofToronto. Elizabeth also witnessed a marriage
between John Taylor and Mary Ann Horne in ‘Klineburgh’,
north of Toronto in 1864.
In 1871, the mother of Ellen and Elizabeth was 60 years old
and living with Hugh and Ellen in King Township. Her
death occurred in 1875.
This is the information we have about the Waggot family.
