1851 Census - Cheltenham, England

The 1851 Census in England was taken in the spring of 1851.  The census that is often called the 1851 in Canada was not taken until January, 1852.  Therefore, Joseph Brown appears in both censuses which gives us an immigration date within months.

Joseph and his family appear in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.  He is shown as a 'plasterer' as he is in the 1861 in King Twp, Ontario.

To be continued

Browns of King Township, 1861

Joseph Brown, plasterer, his wife Harriet and their large family are listed in King Twp in the 1861 census above.  Immediately following Joseph is William Brown, also a plasterer, his wife Mary, and their son William all born England.

The Browns lived on the 7th concession of King Twp and William Brown is shown in the index as locating in 1851.  The Peacocks lived on the same concession, but farther south and on land shown to belong to a Cornelius  O'Shea.  You can see that the lot is divided and there is a small town lot on the concession road which we believed Thomas Peacock lived on when they first came to Canada in 1865 or 66.  They did not own the land and are shown as renting in the 1871 census.

Marriage of Wm Brown and Susannah Moffat

William Brown and Susannah Moffat, sister of Mary, were married in Simcoe County in 1898.  William is shown as 48 years of age and a hotelkeeper in Falkenburg.  Susannah was residing in Orillia at the time of the marriage.  Only her mother's name is given.

Junction Hotel, Falkenburg

This photo is taken from R.J. Boyer's book, A Good Town Grew Here.  William Brown was proprietor of this hotel for a time, according to his obituary.

Obituary for William Brown

Source: A Good Town Grew Here - Robert J. Boyer
Oxbow Press, Bracebridge - 1975,
p.130

1907
William Brown, 57, who located in Monck in 1867 and for many years kept the Junction Hotel at Falkenburg, later residing at Bracebridge; his father was a founder of the first Orange Lodge here; Mr. Brown's first wife was Catherine Peacock, and after her death, he married Susannah Moffat...

Comment: Susannah was probably the sister of Mary Moffat, the wife of Robert Peacock, Catherine's brother.

Wm & Catherine Brown, Monk Twp

Photo by VEH - Click on photo to enlarge.

In August, I posted the 1871 and 1881 census records for Monk
Township, Muskoka, Ontario showing William Brown, Sr. and
William Brown, Jr., the husband of Catherine Peacock, the
eldest and only daughter of Thomas Peacock and Sarah Smith
(as far as we know).

In the 1881 census, Catherine's teenaged brother, Robert, was
living with them. In 1891, we find the Browns on the same land,
but now Robert Peacock is married to Mary Moffat and they
have three children and are living next door to William and
Catherine.

1891 Census – Monck Township, Simcoe County East
(sic – don’t know why Muskoka is included in Simcoe at this time)

Family 44 –
Shaeffer, W.H. m. 48. M, Sawmill

Family 45 –
Brown, William, m, 42, b. Eng., Methodist, Farmer
Brown, Catherine, f, 48, b. Ireland
Brown, William, m. 67, Widower, b. England

Family 46 -
Peacock, William, m.9, son, b. Ont,
father b. Ont, mother b. Eng

(This is probably the son of John Peacock and Mary Ellen
Oliver. There must have been a lot and a building there.)

Family 47 –
Peacock, Robert, m. 27, b. Ire, parents born Ire.
Peacock, Mary, f. 24, b. Ont, parents born Ire.
Peacock, William Henry or Harry, m. 6, b. Ont.
Peacock, Andrew James, m. 5. b Ont.
Peacock, Catherine Ann, f. 3. b. Ont.

Family 48 –
Holmes/Holmer?, John, Farmer

(Catherine Brown died in 1897 and her husband remarried
Susannah sometime before 1901. The adopted daugher, Eliza,
is probably Susannah's from a previous marriage.

Robert Peacock died Dec, 1899 at Scotia Junction; therefore,
his family moved from Monk Twp sometime after this census
was taken in 1891 to Scotia Junction in the Huntsville area.
However, after his death, some of his children lived with William
Brown, Jr. as shown below.)

1901 Census Simcoe Monk (taken March 31, 1901)

Blanchard, Harry; Nichols, James; Dinner,Wm.; Dinner, Richard.

1911 census Monk Township

(Con. A lot 15 – this is the same lot and concession
as William Brown’s land. Perhaps John Peacock,
the brother of Catherine, bought Wm Brown Sr.'s land
after he was widowed. Or he bought Robert Peacock's
land after the death of Robert in 1899. The Thomas below
is the 4th son of John Peacock and Mary Ellen Oliver and
he married Emma Forsyth.)

William Brown - King Township

The Brown family had been in King Township since before
the 1851 Census. (Needs to be updated.  Joseph Peacock, probably his brother, appears in both the 1851 census in England and the 1851 Census in Canada which was taken in Jan, 1852. )

William Brown Jr. & Catherine Peacock

In November, 1870, William Brown (Sr.) acquired a free land grant
of 100 acres in Macaulay Township in the District of Muskoka. It
was located on lot 7 of concession IX. I don’t believe they lived on
this land; however, it is significant because Catherine’s father later
lived on lot 8.

These lots are roughly between District Road No. 4 and Highway #11.
(Click on the above orange title for a map. The red star is the cemetery
on Lone Pine Drive just off District Rd 4). This area between the roads
is now abandoned with little to suggest that the land was farmed more
than a hundred years ago. There is a road going west off Highway #11
which is probably the concession road but it doesn’t go right across to
District Road 4. The families along the concession road would have
walked less than two miles to attend the little Anglican church beside
the cemetery. (It was moved from Concession X after the railway made Falkenburg Station the new centre of Falkenburg in the 1880's.)

The Browns also obtained a lot on concession VIII of Monck Township.
The first lots in Monck Township, west of the Macaulay township line,
run roughly east/west instead of north/south. The Brown’s lot number
was A15 and on a recent map, it would be on the left side just after the
railway tracks on the Hillman Lake Road.

**FALKENBURG - A post-office in Macaulay Township, lot 2, 10th con., 6 miles from Bracebridge, and 68 from Barrie. The neighborhood was first settled in 1862 by Edwin Griffin, Sidney Tibbs, and Samuel Holditch. The Muskoka River, in the vicinity, provides almost unlimited manufacturing power.
