Mary Jane Peacock was born in King Township on June 5, 1865. She was the third daughter and fifth child of Hugh and Ellen. She appears in the 1871 and 1881 census records with her parents in Ontario. Mary Jane was married first to John Grant. The marriage took place in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 5th, 1886 when she was almost twenty-one. Two children were born to this union. Andrew Wallace was born November 15, 1887 in Manitoba. His sister, Olive Rosetta was born August 16, 1889 in Whitewater, Manitoba. I have not found the Grants in the 1891 census, however, they were probably living not far from Mary Jane's parents in Whitewater.I have been unable to find a record of the death of John Grant; however, Mary Jane was married secondly to Thomas Ardath Stanlake. The marriage took place on March 23, 1894 in Brandon, Manitoba.

Three sons were born to this second union. Russell Porterfield Stanlake was born January 28th, 1895 in Winchester, Manitoba. He died in the battle of the Somme on October 8, 1916. He was twenty-one years old and among 24,000 Canadian soldiers who died. He is buried at the Adanac (Canada spelled backwards) Military Cemetery, Somme, France. The following information was gleaned from a Canadian military website -
